Dreadlock care

Palmrolling

To make sure your dreadlocks stay or become round and compact, you need to palmroll regularly. The first 2 months of your dreadlock journey, we recommend to do this daily. After that, once every 2 weeks is enough.

How? Take a dread between both your palms and roll it with some pressure back and forth (but handle with care ;). Make sure that you do this to the entire length of the dreadlock.

Washing your dreads

Washing your dreadlocks is an important part of the needed care. Wash them with a cleansing shampoo that makes your hair rough (so not slippery or silky). We use RAW Roots Hydrating shampoo and Herbal Cleanser shampoo.

Apply the shampoo thoroughly but carefully. You want to cleanse your dreads but at the same time you don’t want to be too rough on the new growth of your dreadlocks. You don’t want hairs to let loose of the dreadlock, because this means: frizz.

Even more important: rinse your dreads thoroughly with water. You want as little residue as possible to stay in your dreadlocks. This increases the chance of bad smells and fungi. And last but not least: make sure your dreads dry fast and all the way. With a blow dryer for instance (but not too hot!).

Sleeping cap
Sleep with a sleeping cap on. This prevents frizz and stops dust from lingering in your dreadlocks. We use stretching sleeping caps (like tights). These stay put all night.

New growth maintenance
How often maintenance is required, depends on your hair type, wishes and how for along you are in your dreadlocks journey.

When your dreadlocks are newly placed, we recommend you have your first maintenance after 6 weeks. That way we can make sure your dreads are and stay firm and compact. After that, maintenance can be scheduled every 2-3 months.
